The NFL season is just about halfway through, many teams have surprised us with just how good or bad they have been. Here’s the week 8 recap.
Offensive Player of The Week
This week the Las Vegas Raiders took on the New York Jets in a game that was an offensive dual the whole way through. The Raiders were lead to victory by this week’s Offensive Player of The Week, quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Cousins had 247 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown. Cousins was able to pass the ball very efficiently all game, and get his team to a 4-4 record. The Raiders look to ride on this momentum from Cousins into their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Defensive Player of The Week
The Tennessee Titans have had a rough year, and aren’t a team you’d typically expect to see in this blog post outside of the worst team of the week, however, this week they played a great game against the Cincinnati Bengals, despite losing, defensive back Amani Hooker had an incredible game.
Hooker logged 6 tackles, and 3 interceptions. Obviously the Bengals QB Joe Burrow is a guy who throws the ball a lot, but even with him throwing as much as he does he hasn’t been the type of player to throw a lot of interceptions in quite a few years, so this performance by Hooker to get 3 interceptions is an excellent performance, and it single handedly kept the Titans in that game all the way until overtime where they eventually lost.
Best Team of The Week
This week the Jacksonville Jaguars took on the Indianapolis Colts, after a bad start to the season for the Colts and multiple players being traded, the Jaguars went into this game expecting to win, and that they did. The Jaguars beat the Colts 42-7, with players like QB Trevor Lawrence and running back Bhayshul Tuten having spectacular games. Of course the defense also had a great game considering they held the Colts to 7 points.
Worst Team of The Week
Despite how bad I just said the Colts were against the Jaguars, there was actually a worse team this week, the Atlanta Falcons. The game between the Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers started off with very heavy rain, which resulted in some bad football throughout the game, especially Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield who didn’t complete a pass the whole game. In the end though the Falcons were worse, losing the game 16-0. QB Michael Penix only completed 8 passes on 24 attempts, and he threw 4 interceptions, and despite having one of the best running backs in the league in Bijan Robinson, they couldn’t even get the run game going. An overall terrible performance.
MVP Race
At third place as of now is Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff. He was first place last week, and he did beat the undefeated Minnesota Vikings this week, however it wasn’t a great game for him by any means. Goff in the win only had 176 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. It’s a huge win for the Lions against a team that has been playing an elite level of defense but as a player performance there are definitely players in the MVP race who were better this week.
In second place is Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen. He’s been within the top three of the MVP race all season so far, and as long as he keeps winning and playing well he’ll stay in the top three. Against the Baltimore Ravens this week Josh Allen threw for 289 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He dissected a Ravens. defense that has been great this season, and this is why Allen is a consistent MVP contender.
At first place is Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams. He is a little behind in stats compared to other contenders due to the fact he missed a few games with an injury, however he has proven just how valuable he is to the team in the games he’s been playing, especially the last two weeks. During his last two games he had to face both the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, which of course were last year’s Super Bowl teams. In both those game he played great and won both, which is no easy feat against two very good defenses.
