On Thursday, September 12, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a third concussion after running down the middle of the field and diving head first into Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
Shortly after hitting Hamlin, Tagovailoa fell to the ground and right away everybody could tell something was wrong, coaches and athletic trainers rushed to the field to help him up and off the field as soon as he was ready.
Tagovailoa managed to walk on his own to go to the teams locker room where he was ultimately ruled out with a concussion, the third of his career. This has left many people saying it’s not worth it to continue playing, and that he needs to retire for his health.
“I’ll be honest, I’d tell him to retire. It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it. Played the game, I haven’t witnessed anything like I’ve seen that’s happened to him three times.” Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce stated, Pierce followed up by saying he thinks Tagovailoa needs to retire so he can live longer and take care of his family.
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant said the NFL needs to do the right thing and have Tagovailoa retire for the sake of his long term health.
Opposing QB Josh Allen spoke on the matter after the game, “You can’t help but feel for him. He is a great football player but he is an even greater human being.”
Some people believe that the only people who should be telling him to retire are his family, but at this point in time more people than just his family are concerned about his health and want to make sure he can stay healthy and doesn’t end up with something like Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) super early in life.
Hamlin has received backlash from fans for being the one to hit Tagovailoa, but he really shouldn’t receive any backlash at all because all he did was try to make a routine tackle.
