Week 5 of the NFL season was the most electric week of the season so far with many great performances, but there were still some bad ones too. Week 5 also featured the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Atlanta Falcons which was one of the best Thursday Night Football games probably since the Dallas Cowboys faced off against the Seattle Seahawks last year, and a great rivalry match between the Cowboys and the Steelers on Saunday night after an hour and a half weather delay. Now week 5 kicks off tonight with the San Francisco 49ers traveling to Washington to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
The Worst
At number three is Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton, who played very poorly in a blowout loss to the Chicago Bears.
Dalton completed 18 passes on 28 attempts for 136 yards, 4.9 yards per attempt, 0 touchdowns and 1 interception. This performance did the Panthers no favors against the Bears and forced them to rely on their running game which was never going to be enough to keep up with the Bears.
In all fairness Dalton is playing for the Panthers who haven’t been great and the roster isn’t good enough to to help win a lot of games especially against a team like the Bears, and the head coach Dave Canales has said some concerning things regarding how he’s coaching the team so he could be part of the issue as well.
At number two is Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, who struggled all game long resulting in a loss to the Houston Texans.
Allen completed just 9 passes on 30 attempts for 131 yards, 4.4 yards per attempt, 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions. The Bills passing game was non existent against the Texans which is rare when Allen is the QB, it was clearly a bad game for him.
In all fairness to Allen, he doesn’t have great wide receivers to throw too, but up until week 4 against the Ravens, they had been playing well enough for the Bills to win games, also the play calling was questionable especially towards the end of the game when it was tied 20-20 and instead of running the ball to drain clock it was 3 straight deep passes that would stop the clock and give the Texans the ball so they could kick their game winning field goal.
At number one is New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, who was one of the main reasons the Jets lost such an important game to the Minnesota Vikings, and may have costed his head coach Robert Saleh a job.
Rodgers completed 29 passes on 54 attempts for 244 yards, 4.5 yards per attempt, 2 touchdowns and a high 3 interceptions. The 3 interceptions definitely cost the Jets the game especially when one of them was thrown near the end zone when the Jets could’ve potentially scored a game winning touchdown pending extra point since they were down only 6 points, 17-23.
In all fairness to Rodgers the play calling from offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, but bad play calling is not going to cause Rodgers to throw 3 interceptions, so a lot of it is still on him.
The Best
At number three is Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who put on a very good performance to beat the Cincinnati Bengals even though some of his mistakes are the reason they almost lost to the Bengals.
Jackson completed 26 passes on 42 attempts for 348 yards, 8.3 yards per attempt, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Jackson also had 12 rushing attempts for 55 yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 fumbles but only lost 1 of them.
Jackson put together some amazing plays to keep the Ravens alive when they were down 10 points against the Bengals including picking up the ball on a fumbled snap and then stiff-arming a guy and proceeding to throw a touchdown, Jackson has proved that the Ravens first two games this season were flukes and they are definitely still a threat to contend for a Super Bowl, but the Ravens are going to need this version of Jackson in the playoffs for their Super Bowl dreams to come true.
At number two is Bengals QB Joe Burrow, who played an amazing game but still came up short due to the Ravens.
Burrow completed 30 passes on 39 attempts for 392 yards, 10 yards per attempts, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. He put on the near perfect performance he said he would need to beat the Ravens but still lost.
Some people may say the interception was why but the defense could’ve done better and when they were going to kick a game winning field goal the hold was messed up and the kicker missed so they ended up losing, this game does not fall on Burrows 1 interception.
At number one is Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins, who set the record for the most passing yards in a single game by any QB in Falcons history.
Cousins completed 42 passes on 58 attempts for 509 yards, 8.8 yards per attempt, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. This was a spectacular game the Falcons needed out of him after he had a slow start to the season the weeks before.
Cousins showed that he is not the guy he was once known to be during prime time games, often playing worse than normal and losing prime time games, but in recent history he has seemed to be the reason his team has won prime time games putting on great performances.
Looking Forward to Week 6
Week 6 will kick off tonight in a rivalry game that is equally important for both teams with the 49ers sitting at a 2-3 record following a disappointing loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the Seahawks are 3-2 after probably an equally disappointing loss to the New York Giants. Sunday will end with the Giants hosting the Bengals which is a big game for the Bengals if they want any chance at stringing some games together and possibly making the playoffs. Finally, Monday Night football to end the week will feature a big game in New York between the Jets and the Bills, it would be an important win for the Jets to get up to 3-3, but it is equally important for the Bills to avoid dropping three straight games and fall to 3-3.
