Week 7 of the NFL season wrapped up Monday night with a double header featuring the Baltimore Ravens visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Chargers visiting the Arizona Cardinals. This week featured the Minnesota Vikings losing their first game of the season to the very dominant looking Detroit Lions, and the Kansas City Chiefs becoming the only undefeated team left after beating the San Francisco 49ers who left that game with multiple big injuries. Let’s look at the worst and best performances of the week.
The Worst
At number three is New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who had a very important game to avoid a 2-5 record but didn’t play well enough to win.
Rodgers completed 24 out of 39 passes for 276 yards, 7.1 yards per attempt, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. This performance was very underwhelming for the first game with Davante Adams being a Jets wide receiver, many people expected Rodgers to have a great game being able to throw to Adams but instead missed Adams multiple times and couldn’t get the offense moving.
In all fairness to Rodgers the 2 interceptions were less his fault and more of wide receiver Garrett Wilson’s fault because both of the interceptions came on passes to him, the first one was yanked out of his hands and the second one bounced off of his chest, either way, Rodgers has to find a way to move the ball down field consistently if they Jets are going to start winning games.
At number two is Carolina Panthers QB Andy Dalton, who has now proven that first week he started was a fluke week and he isn’t going to win the Panthers any more games.
Dalton completed 11 out of 16 passes for 93 yards, 5.8 yards per attempt, 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. This performance is a big reason why the Panthers lost to the Washington Commanders 7-40, because the turnovers came early on allowing the Commanders defense to jump to a big lead straight away.
In all fairness to Dalton, he is playing for the Carolina Panthers who are most likely going to finish as the worst team in the league, so there is only so much he can do.
At number one is Las Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew, who played a terrible game but still could’ve had a chance at beating the Los Angeles Rams if he played just a little better.
Minshew completed 15 passes on 34 attempts for 154 yards, 4.5 yards per attempt, 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. This performance is likely the main reason the Raiders lost 15-20 to the Rams because he kept giving the ball back to the Rams and couldn’t find the end zone, 1 touchdown from him would’ve been enough to win the game but he couldn’t do it.
In all fairness to Minshew the Raiders roster isn’t special and the offense might even have less talent than the Panthers, but with the final score being as close as it was most people are going to look Minshew’s way and blame him due to his turnovers.
The Best
At number three is Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, who had a great game in the blowout win over the Tennessee Titans.
Allen completed 21 out of 33 passes for 323 yards, 9.9 yards per attempt, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. This has become a pretty normal performance for him every week now, and he still has yet to throw an interception this season despite throwing a lot of interceptions in previous years.
Going into this season Allen was voted the most overrated player by other players in the league, but has been proving everybody wrong this entire season, playing great football with a worse team than he had last year and is keeping the Bills hopes of possibly going to the superbowl alive.
At number two is Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson, who started off a little slow in his first game of the year but quickly picked things up and helped the Steelers blowout the Jets 15-37.
Wilson completed 16 out of 29 passes for 264 yards, 9.1 yards per attempt, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, he also added 3 rushing attempts for 3 yards and 1 touchdown. Wilson’s performance is what head coach Mike Tomlin was looking for when he decided to bench Justin Fields for Wilson despite the fact Fields had been playing well enough to win games.
Many people disagreed with Tomlins decision to bench Fields for Wilson once he became fully healthy because Fields had been playing well and the Steelers were winning games with him, but Tomlin felt as if Wilson can contribute a little more to the offense than Fields can now and he seems to have been right.
At number one is Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who had an amazing game in the win over the Buccaneers which would’ve been a blowout win if the Ravens defense didn’t allow the Buccaneers to bring it within 10 points for a final score of 41-31.
Jackson completed 17 out of 22 passes for 281 yards, 12.8 yards per attempt, 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, he also contributed on the ground as usual with 9 rushing attempts for 52 yards.
Jackson has been dominant this year and has the Ravens on a 5 game win streak after starting the season 0-2, of course not doing it all by himself because he has the help from running back Derrick Henry who is having a career year, but either way Jackson has been the great QB he has been in previous years with the Ravens and is making his case for a third Most Valuable Player award.
Looking Forward to Week 8
Week 8 will kick off with a Thursday Night Football matchup where the Minnesota Vikings will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams. Sunday will feature games such as Philadelphia Eagles traveling to Cincinnati to play the Bengals, a rematch between the Atlanta Falcons and the Buccaneers, a likely offensive battle between the Commanders and the Chicago Bears, and Sunday Night Football will feature a non division rivalry match with the Dallas Cowboys traveling to Levi’s Stadium to play the San Francisco 49ers. The week will wrap up with a likely one sided Monday Night Football matchup as the struggling New York Giants travel to Pittsburgh to take on the very good Steelers.
